First Great Eastern train services between Southend Victoria and Liverpool Street were delayed by up to 20 minutes this morning because of a "slow-moving freight train".
The locomotive held up commuters from south-east Essex at around 9am while travelling through the Stratford area.
There were knock-on effects along the route.
