Southend United favourite Steve Tilson will finally get his long-awaited Roots Hall testimonial on Tuesday, April 1, 2003.

Blues fans have campaigned for years to persuade the Third Division club to reward the midfielder, who has made 269 appearances for the Shrimpers, with a benefit match.

And the 36-year-old, who is now joint assistant manager at Roots Hall, said he hoped to attract a Premiership club for his big night next year.

"I'm really grateful to the club for granting me a testimonial and now I would like to get a big game on at Roots Hall for all of the fans," said Tilson.

"A testimonial is a very special thing for a player and it is also a way of saying thank you to all the Southend supporters who have been great to me over the years.

"I've already started writing letters to all of the glamorous Premiership clubs and I hope one of them will come down here for me.

"Let's just say I'm keeping my fingers-crossed that Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool are free on the night."

Footballers are granted testimonials if they complete ten-years of loyal service with one club.

If anyone would like to help or offer sponsorship they should contact Tilson's testimonial committee chairman Simon Steggles on 07753 690556.
