Bosses at Benfleet's Somerfield were today left counting the cost of a break in.
Raiders smashed a £1,000 window to get into the supermarket in the town's High Road.
Police are now appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the intruders.
A police spokesperson said: "We got reports the alarm was going off at the store and the window had been put in.
"It appears nothing was actually stolen from the store, but we are still treating this as an attempted burglary and investigations will continue."
Police believe the incident took place on Saturday night - call them on 01268 756221.
