Ali Carter's bid to make history in the final Benson and Hedges Snooker Championship ended in disappointment and silence last night.
The Tiptree ace was the only player in the last 16 still in with a chance of lifting the trophy for a second time, when it came to finals night at the Towers Snooker Club in Mansfield.
A 5-1 victory over 1996 champion Brian Morgan put Carter in good heart for his sixth round game against Glaswegian Drew Henry.
Instead, the Tiptree professional lost 5-3 to world number 22 Henry and didn't hang around at the end of the match to discuss his heart-breaking defeat.
Carter was never in front in an entertaining contest that saw Scotsman Henry produce breaks of 84, 67 and 59, while his Essex opponent replied with 74, 38 and 95.
