An outbreak of food poisoning in Braintree has worsened with 20 confirmed cases and 14 more suspected.

Last Thursday, the Evening Gazette revealed about ten people had fallen ill after eating at a restaurant in the Braintree district.

Today, environmental health officers confirmed that 20 people have salmonella food poisoning.

Some 14 more people have fallen ill with similar symptoms but the cause has yet to be confirmed.

Environmental health officers from Braintree Council said they could not name the restaurant until tests had been completed.

A spokeswoman for Braintree Council's environmental health service said: "We are investigating a food poisoning incident in the Braintree district. So far we have confirmed 20 cases, which involve salmonella enteritidis.

"We are also looking into 14 others, which we have not been able to confirm at the moment."

A person infected with the salmonella enteritidis bacterium usually has fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhoea beginning 12 to 72 hours after consuming a contaminated food or beverage.
