Colchester's newest road could be opened by Christmas - two months ahead of schedule.
But it will not be open to motorists until next year.
The lower portion of the Northern Approaches is to open early so contractors working on the project can use it.
The move is just part of a package of proposals announced today to alleviate the traffic congestion caused by the roadworks around North Station.
George Ward, Colchester Council's senior engineer, said construction traffic will be able to use the lower section of the Northern Approaches if work goes according to plan.
But members of the public will have to wait until the end of February before they get a chance to do a road test.
Initially, it was thought engineers would wait until the entire length of the road was completed before it could be used but now they want to let lorries use it in two phases.
Mr Ward said opening the new stretch of road early will take construction traffic off other roads making it easier for motorists to make their way through.
