A rugby club is warning people to be on the lookout for children claiming to be collecting money for its fireworks night.

Over the past week youngsters, dressed in Hallowe'en costumes, have called at a number of houses on the Glebe Estate in Braintree claiming to be collecting for the Braintree Rugby Club fireworks evening.

Last week, a boy and a girl called at the house of a woman in Glebe Avenue, and two boys called at a house in Boleyns Avenue on Monday.

After the children had gone away, the residents of the houses called the club to say they were concerned about them sending children to carry out door-to-door collections.

Junior Welfare officer for the Rugby Club, Corinne Winwoods, said it did not collect money for its fireworks night as it was a purely commercial event to raise funds for the club.

"We do not condone door-to-door collections by children due to the dangers involved," said Mrs Winwoods.

Information to Braintree police on 01376 551312.
