Computers are set to be used to assess pupils work at a Colchester school - as part of a pioneering project to ease teacher workloads.
Philip Morant Technology College is today unpacking more than 100 computers after striking a unique and unprecented deal with Microsoft and Compaq-HP.
The school will be opening a special 120-terminal learning centre at the Rembrant Way site which will be used by pupils when their teachers are off sick.
Included in the deal is advanced software which gives pupils lessons in a range of subjects and which can assess their work along the way.
College headteacher Russell Moon claimed the deal will make Philip Morant a "world leader" in the use of technology in learning.
