Repair work means Colchester High Street will be closed to traffic on Sundays, starting this weekend.
The road will be closed on Sundays October 27, November 3 and November 17 from 2am through to 5am on Mondays, so repairs to crossings can be made.
Colchester Council said it would enable essential repairs to be carried out as quickly and safely as possible.
Pedestrian access along the street to shop premises will be unaffected by the works.
John Simpson, head of street services, said the work was needed to repair the surface of 11 crossings which had been affected by heavy vehicles, particularly buses, driving over them.
