A Crackdown on Colchester car crime was launched today.

As part of a countywide scheme Essex Police, Crimestoppers and Crime Reduction Partnerships are calling for members of the public to inform on car criminals.

The Colchester part of the two-week scheme was launched at Queen Street bus station toda

Adverts are going up on billboards and buses in the town calling on residents to Shop 'em and Stop 'em.

Peter Carrington, community safety officer at Colchester Council, said there are 9.2 vehicle crimes per 1,000 population in the town.

He said car crime related to theft, unauthorised taking, theft from the vehicle and aggravated vehicle taking.

He said: "The figures are low to mid range, people are obviously aware but we want to improve on that."

Mr Carrington advised motorists to take their belongings out of their cars when left unattended or lock them in the boot.
