A Colchester man is in hospital with a broken neck after the car he was travelling in hit a tree.
The 22-year-old passenger was taken to Colchester General Hospital, where he is in a serious condition.
A spokesman for Stanway Traffic Police said his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
The driver, a 20-year-old man from Colchester, was also taken to the hospital with cuts.
Firefighters were on their way to the accident site in Ramparts Lane, off Berechurch Hall Road, at 8.30pm on Sunday when they saw the shocked driver wandering along the roadside.
After picking him up, firefighters reached the crash site, where they cut the passenger free.
