Police have launched a huge DNA screening operation to catch a sex attacker who struck in Colchester.
Samples are to be taken from anyone resembling the description of the man who seriously sexually assaulted a teenager. The move will include some 20 dedicated officers taking to the streets.
Investigators have a full DNA profile of the man and people picked up in the investigation will be asked to give DNA samples for comparison.
At a news conference Acting Det Supt Gareth Wilson, senior investigation officer leading Operation Telford, urged the attacker to give himself up, saying it was only a matter of time before he was caught.
He asked anyone who thought they might know the sex attacker's identity to call the police in confidence.
He said because of the DNA sample it would be quick and easy to eliminate men from inquiries or find the attacker.
The suspect is white, in his early to mid 20s, about 5'10" tall, of slim build, with blonde or brown hair about 2cm long.
He had an Essex accent and wore a beige or brown waist-length zip-up jacket with a collar, a light top, black trousers and black shoes.
The man assaulted the 19-year-old woman shortly after midnight on October 10, on a pathway, known locally as Bluebottle Grove, which leads from Parson's Hill to Norman Way in Lexden.
Following the attack the suspect made off towards Norman Way and was last seen turning left towards Lexden Road.
Divisional commander Chief Supt Dave Murthwaite said while the attack was serious, it was an isolated incident.
He reminded people to stay in well-lit areas when walking about at night now the evenings were drawing in.
Acting Det Supt Wilson said police were keen to talk to a man of Far Eastern appearance who the victim had spoken to before the attack.
He said the man was not thought to have been involved with the incident but could have seen something.
Anyone with information is urged to call the incident room at Colchester police station on 01206 762212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
Police said earlier reports the attacker had been to the Hippodrome nightclub that night were incorrect.
