A car collided with a road sign early today, minutes after allegedly failing to stop when asked to by police officers in a marked vehicle.

The driver and his passenger had to be cut free after the accident at about 4.30am on the A133 Little Clacton bypass, just after the St John's roundabout in Clacton.

A police spokesman said the car been requested to stop by officers in a marked police car in St John's Road. It failed to so do and was followed, and the accident then occurred.

The blue Vauxhall car was the only vehicle involved in the incident. The road was closed off while an investigation was carried out by police.

It was still shut as rush-hour traffic built up and vehicles were diverted along the old A133 London Road. The bypass reopened just after 7.30am.

The accident took place just a few yards from Clacton Fire Station. Sub-officer Jack Warner said that three crews attended.

"The crews from Clacton managed to get the occupants out of the car using cutting equipment," he said.

Officers from Stanway traffic unit and the traffic unit from Thorpe went to the incident. Witnesses are asked to call the Stanway office on 01206 762512.
