Chris Makin has welcomed news that former boss Peter Reid is the new favourite to take over at Ipswich Town.

The ex-Sunderland chief is thought to have met chairman David Sheepshanks for secret talks in London.

And it is believed Reid - recently sacked by the Black Cats - could be installed in time for Saturday's clash with Gillingham at Portman Road.

Makin, signed by Reid in 1997, made more than 100 appearances for Sunderland before joining Ipswich last March.

And, excited by the prospect of being reunited with his old boss, Makin said: "Obviously, it's still speculation but it would certainly be a great appointment.

"Peter's a real character and everyone knows how passionate he is about football. Because of that, he always had a great rapport with the Sunderland players and I'm sure it would be the same here at Ipswich.

"He's also done a lot for me during my career. I had four happy years under him and it was Peter who brought me back here from Marseilles."

Former England midfielder Reid - who won 13 caps - started his career with Bolton before playing for Everton, QPR, Manchester City, Southampton, Notts County and Bury.

Makin was also quick to add his support for current caretaker-boss Tony Mowbray, who takes charge for the third time tonight when Burnley visit Portman Road.

Town have won one and lost one since he took over the reigns from sacked predecessor George Burley.

"I've known Tony for a long time and he's as good as anyone for the job," said Makin.

"None of the lads would have any complaints if he got it on a permanent basis."
