A man was robbed of his wallet by two men armed with a scaffolding pole.
The victim was walking along Harwich Road, Colchester, at about 1am on Saturday when a dark coloured Ford Sierra or Granada car pulled up alongside him.
A man got out of the car and threatened him with a metal scaffolding pole and took his wallet containing £20.
Det Sgt Roger Napier praised the victim.
He said: "He was wise. It's really not worth getting your head smashed in for £20."
The man with the pole was described as being of medium build, about 5ft 7ins tall and was clean shaven. He was wearing a white sweatshirt and black trousers and had a local accent.
The other man was described as white, in his 20s and was wearing a chequered baseball cap and a dark top.
Anyone with any information is asked to call Colchester police on 01206 762212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
