Royal photographer Lord Lichfield has blown the whistle on the secret behind the perfect picture he snapped of the royal family at the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana.
Lord Lichfield reveals a trade secret or two while speaking at Clacton
It was a football referee's whistle which helped produce the photograph used around the world.
This was just one of the amusing stories shared by the top fashion and society photographer when he spoke to Clacton Arts and Literary Society yesterday.
It was his second talk for the society at Clacton's Princes Theatre. The royal wedding of the decade allowed him to give one of his secrets for getting the best wedding shot.
The noise, he said, just made every one of the 62 royals look up together at the camera at the same time.
Lord Lichfield, known professionally as Patrick Lichfield, returned to Clacton after 16 years.
He talked about the advances of digital photography but also the mistaken identities and foreign faux pas that have dogged him over his 40 years as a professional photographer.
