A driver and his passenger had a lucky escape after the car they were travelling in collided with a lamppost and they had to be cut free from the vehicle.

The accident happened around 4.50am today on the A133 Little Clacton Bypass, just after the St John's Road Roundabout at Clacton.

The Vauxhall car was the only one involved in the incident and the road was closed off while a full investigation was carried out by police.

It was still shut as the rush hour traffic built up and vehicles were diverted along the old A133 London Road.
