Aveley player-manager Steve Mosely settled this local derby at Rookery Hill from the penalty spot eight minutes from time.
Aveley's introduction of striker Tommy Lee 20 minutes from the end seemed to change the course of a game which beforehand appeared to be drifting towards a goalless draw.
Mark Cartlidge missed out on the best chance of the first half, failing to convert for Lee Patterson's Rocks after 37 minutes.
Mosely put a 30-yard free-kick into the side netting early in the second period.
One-time Southend United goalkeeper Jon O'Brien tipped over a vicious Lee free-kick after 79 minutes, but ex-Billericay man Steve Dickinson was pushed in the box three minutes later allowing Mosely to settle the issue.
