Lifeboat crews from Harwich were involved in an air sea rescue search, mounted after a sea captain was reported missing, presumed dead
The master of the Swedish cargo vessel Heinrich G was last seen at 11pm on Saturday.
A spokesman for Thames Coastguards said at 1am on Sunday, they were alerted by a pilot of the ship that the captain was missing when they docked at Ipswich.
An RAF rescue helicopter from Wattisham was also scrambled.
The spokesman said lifeboat crews from Harwich and Aldeburgh also helped in the search, which took place some ten miles off Orfordness.
The search was called off after four and a half hours without the captain being found.
