Guy Fawkes today came under fire from Rayleigh police - for providing the perfect cover for thieves looking to raid a few homes before Christmas.
As firework explosions fill the sky on the night of November 5 locals roasting sausages round the bonfire in the garden cannot hear the burglar break into their homes and make off with their valuables.
Rayleigh police are appealing to residents in Castle Point to lock up their houses before taking part in the festive celebrations.
Leslie Bramhill, crime reduction officer, said: "If you are going to an organised party secure your home and leave the lights on to make it look occupied."
