Grays expect to have signed a midfield player by the weekend, but have denied that it will be Jason Dozzell.
Blues remain interested in the former Spurs and Ipswich man. Released by Canvey Island, the 34-year-old was to have played in a behind-closed-doors friendly during the week but that fell victim to Tuesday night's weather.
Player/manager Mark Stimson has created some momentum at the Rec in the short time he has been in charge and will expect it to continue at the expense of Hayes.
Last weekend Grays knocked them out of the FA Cup and again have home advantage this time in the league.
Stimson is likely to move from the subs' bench to the team proper having fully recovered from an ankle problem, but remains without his long-term injury trio of Danny Hazelden, Owen Coll and Alan Keeper.
