Campaigning residents are hoping next year will bring new traffic calming measures to their road.
Residents in London Road, Braintree, have been fighting to get the road closed to through traffic for a number of years.
Homeowners want to stop non-residential traffic using the road as a short-cut, instead of driving along the A131 Notley Bypass.
A series of traffic calming measures were put in about three years ago, as part of a £100,000 programme of works by Essex County Council, in a bid to make traffic use the bypass. It included a 30mph limit and road narrowing.
But residents claimed the scheme had not helped and relaunched the campaign by handing a 126-name petition to the county council.
Now, following a recent meeting between residents, county councillors and a council highways officer, the council has said two extra calming measures are being pursued.
The further narrowing of the road to a single lane at each end would give priority to vehicles leaving London Road.
