Steve Whitton is confident that belief will be the key that turns around Colchester United's season.

Belief that he is preparing his squad in all the right ways and his players' belief in their own ability to come through one of their most stormy patches in seasons.

His U's team has not won a League or cup game for seven outings and that's an unwanted record the U's boss is determined to put right against high-flying Chesterfield at Layer Road tonight.

Whitton said: "I've never allowed our poor run of results, or our well documented lengthy injury list, to prey on my mind.

"My self belief has got me through.

"We don't always get what we deserve out of a game and that certainly doesn't mean the things we've been doing are wrong.

"If we create as many chances against Chesterfield as we did against Wycombe Wanderers in our last home game there's no reason why we shouldn't score three or four goals."

Tall central defender Pat Baldwin is added to the squad tonight, but club captain Scott Fitzgerald suffered a groin injury in training yesterday which has put his long awaited return to action back another three weeks
