Residents are calling for the removal of a camper van which they claim is risking their children's safety.

But the van's owner is fighting back, claiming the accusations against him are unfounded.

Residents of Bartram Avenue in Braintree say the van has been parked for four weeks and is an eyesore.

They claim there are people living in it and throwing rubbish bags in surrounding gardens.

Lorraine Sycamore, 32, of Bartram Avenue, said: "There are bags full of rubbish that end up in people's gardens.

"That's what I am trying to get through to the police it's dangerous for the children and we can't let them play there."

Robert Moore, 37, also of Bartram Avenue, agrees, saying he is concerned about cables running from the van, parked in Cunnington Road.

Van owner Stephen Rowe, 45, of Railway Street, Braintree, said he can't believe the complaints.

He said: "I am just restoring the van but am getting persecuted like you wouldn't believe.

"Some kids threw rubbish bags in one of the gardens and the woman started shouting at me. I didn't throw the rubbish but cleared it up for her anyway."

Spokesman for Braintree Council, Chris Trim, said: "The council has been in touch with the owner of the van and are aware of the situation. At the moment, we don't have any power to move it. The police are aware and are also in contact with the owner. We are seeking for the vehicle to be moved somewhere more suitable."
