The Conservatives took control of Basildon Council today after Labour admitted defeat in its bid to cling to power.
The Labour group - which has ruled since May with the help of the Liberal Democrats - has thrown in the towel after the resignation of two key councillors.
A crunch meeting of the group late last night ended with leader Nigel Smith admitting his administration could not carry on while unable to push through its policies.
Conservative leader Malcolm Buckley, who will take over as council leader, said: "We look forward to a protracted period of control with an efficiently-run council that delivers good value and quality services to the public."
