It's got to be cute, hairy and four-legged. The search is on for a star-struck, well-behaved doggie to take the leading role of Toto in the Wizard of Oz.

Clacton Amateur Operatic Society performers have been on the look-out along the seafront and the local playing fields for their new recruit but have not signed up their canine star yet.

Publicity officer Val Endean said: "We are looking for a small, obedient dog that would be happy to perform on stage with Dorothy and the Munchkins in our production of the Wizard of Oz.

"He or she must be friendly and able to cope with being surrounded by children, the audience and the lights."

The dog, possibly a terrier, must be fairly small as it has to be picked up in the musical by Dorothy but it doesn't have to be long-haired or multi-coloured like the Toto in the film.

Doggie owners who think their pet could fill the bill and is ready for stardom on the stage at the West Cliff Theatre at the start of the New Year should telephone Val on 01255 812982.
