An elderly couple had a lucky escape when a car crashed into the front wall of their home.

Patricia Rice, 66, and her husband Gordon, 68, were sitting watching television in the lounge when the Volkswagen lost control, mounted the pavement, careered across the lawn and smashed into the bungalow in Ravensdale, Great Clacton.

Mrs Rice was sitting in her armchair just inches from the wall where the car finished up.

"I heard a screech of brakes and looked out to see the car coming across next door's lawn towards us," said Mrs Rice.

"I did my best David Seaman dive to get away from the wall and there was this bang as it crashed."

The couple rushed out to see if the occupants of the car were all right, but the driver revved up, reversed and sped off into the darkness.

The incident happened at 5.40pm on Tuesday and police are appealing for anyone who saw the red two-door Volkswagen in the Great Clacton area.

PC Joe Loftus said there were two occupants, a male driver and a woman passenger.
