Southend United's reserves earned the praise of player-coach Steve Tilson after rallying to beat Brentford 2-1 at Roots Hall last night.

Midfielder Stephen Evans got the Bees buzzing with an early goal, but the Shrimpers hit back after the break to clinch victory with strikes from left-back Damon Searle and midfielder Stuart Thurgood.

"Despite trailing 1-0 to a good goal, I thought we were the better side in the first-half, but our passing was slow and we didn't hurt them," said Tilson.

"We certainly moved the ball quicker after the break though and produced an end product which earned us two goals."

Blues had three trialists within their ranks against Brentford. Former Queens Park Rangers striker Adam Rustem again featured, this time as a second-half substitute, but is unlikely to remain with the club.

Frome Town hitman Mark Salter, who spent pre-season with Blues, played the full 90 minutes and had a hand in both Southend goals. His reward should be another run out against Millwall's second-string next week.

The last trialist was 19-year-old Charlton midfielder Kevin George who showed flashes of promise and could join Blues for training on Monday.
