The Chelmsford branch of the Inland Waterways Association has been awarded nearly £25,000 towards the cost of repairs and maintenance to the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation.
The Essex Environment Trust grant of £24,500 will be split into two parts to support the funding of repairs to the lock paddle gear - £11,500 - and repairs to Stoneham Weir - £13,000.
Doug Beard, IWA South East Region Chairman, said: "The Association is delighted to be awarded the grant. It is vital for the navigation to secure funds for its maintenance, repair and replacement, including the locks, navigation equipment, weirs, sluices and river bank protection."
Working with the Company of the Proprietors of the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation Ltd, the Chelmsford branch of the IWA has identified works totalling in excess of £600,000 that need to be undertaken during the coming four years.
