Plans to build 68 houses on a picturesque paddock in Witham were last night thrown out by councillors.
Land north of Blunts Hall Road, Witham, was allocated as a potential site for housing in the first draft version of the Braintree district draft plan.
But at a meeting of Braintree Council regulatory committee last night, councillors heard the authority would still be able to meet its requirement of building 10,300 homes between 1996 and 2011 if the land was removed from the district plan.
Councillors heard that objections to the land being used for housing had been received from the public concerned about its impact on the environment, and from Essex County Council highways department which studied the road access to the site.
