Extra traffic warden patrols have been withdrawn in a part of Wickford, causing concern over the safety of children walking to school in the area.

The measures introduced in Hill Avenue and Beauchamps Drive were made after a campaign by residents but have now been cancelled.

Now neighbours fear for the wellbeing of children walking to nearby schools, Hilltop Infants and Juniors and Beauchamps School while there are frequently cars parked illegally along their route.

Dennis Swaysland from Beauchamps Drive feels that since the patrols have been cancelled, there has been a notable increase in the amount of illegal parking in the roads.

He said: "Around 1,500 youngsters walk to the three schools in the area every day, and the amount of cars obstructing the road is a real hazard.

"I am concerned that if an emergency vehicle needed to get down to an incident, there may be problems because the amount of cars doubled parked."

The increased safety measures were installed after a long campaign by residents, where over 30 letters of concern were received by police.

But, the provisions were abandoned in May this year, after police thought the extra measures for that area were unsustainable.

Insp Richard Croft said: "It was decided that the area did not warrant preferential treatment.

"There are many other schools in the area that do not get these extra patrols."
