Ambitious plans to improve housing around Basildon have been given the go-ahead.
The council has been awarded additional Government funding of £147,000 in recognition of the quality of its housing strategy and business plan.
As in previous years, it received an "above average" assessment for its housing plans, which placed it among the top ten councils in the eastern region by the Government Office for the Regions.
The strategy integrates housing with other council priorities identified in the council plan, particularly areas like crime reduction, healthy living and job opportunities.
Julia Wood, portfolio holder for housing, revenues and benefits, said: "We have put together a far-reaching strategy and a strong business plan for improving housing conditions.
"But, more than that, they will make a significant contribution to the council's overall aims of improving the quality of life for the people of the district and for future generations."
The drive for imporvement will be funded by £97million over the next ten years.
