Ipswich Town's new manager will not be forced to sell star players when the transfer window reopens in January.

That is the message from Blues chairman David Sheepshanks as he continues his search for a successor to George Burley.

Town hope to have a new boss installed within a fortnight, during which time candidates from a short-list will be interviewed about the vacancy at Portman Road.

And, on a day when Bruce Rioch and Bryan Hamilton both confirmed their interest, Sheepshanks said: "By hook or by crook, we've managed to stabilise our finances for the season and I can't emphasis the size of that task.

"Provided we keep working hard and our crowds stay high, we shouldn't be under any pressure to sell in January.

"We weren't always sure that would be the case. That's why we reluctantly agreed to the bids for Matt Holland and Hermann Hreidarsson."

Sheepshanks refused to say how many names were on his short-list when he spoke to fans at Monday night's supporters' roadshow in Clacton.

But he said: "We'll be interviewing candidates in the next couple of weeks and hope to make an appointment in that time."
