A widower has fulfilled his wife's dying wish by raising more than £2,000 for St Luke's Hospice in Basildon.

Kevin Major, whose wife Denise died last month at the age of 50, arranged a number of fundraising events to help the hospice, which was close to her heart.

Son Ben, 11, and daughter Kate, eight, delivered a cheque for £2,078.50 to the hospice.

Mother-of-five Denise fought a long battle against cancer, having beaten the disease once before.

She spent Wednesdays in day care at the hospice, socialising with the other patients and being pampered with aromatherapy and reflexology.

Kevin, of Mount Road, Wickford, said he was thankful for the support St Luke's had given the family.

He said: "Denise was very grateful for the wonderful care and support she received and wanted people to donate the money to St Luke's rather than spend it on flowers for her."

Collections were made by colleagues at Basildon DSS, where the pair worked, Southend Inland Revenue, Castledon Colts Football Club, funeral director S.Carter and Son and the pupils and staff at Wickford Junior School, where two of the couple's children are pupils.
