A new website will soon allow visitors to digitally explore more than 33,000 historic sites in Essex dating from the Stone Age right through to the Cold War.

The 'Unlocking Essex's Past' project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the New Opportunities Fund and Essex County Council, invites people to discover for themselves the historic environment of their area using a searchable online database based on the Essex Record Office's SEAX system.

A simple to use search function enables visitors to look through the Essex Heritage Conservation Record by using specific words or phrases, look up different types of sites or monuments, or view records from a particular period in history.

In addition to the search, the site will also include educational and background information, resources for teachers and learners, virtual models and aerial photographs, a mapping application, and the latest news on the archaeology and history of Essex.

A pilot version of the site has been developed at unlockingessex.essexcc.gov.uk, and users' comments and feedback are invited through the online form available on the site.
