Thousands of children travel outside Basildon to go to secondary school, it has been revealed.
More than a third of parents in the town would rather bus or drive their kids to schools miles away than have them taught locally, despite evidence that standards are rising generally.
Only 64 per cent of children from Basildon attended Basildon secondary schools in 2001 to 2002, according to Essex County Council.
