A shock defeat by bottom club London Nigerians knocked Southend off top spot in London One.
Paddy Dunston's men trailed 15-6 at half-time against a Nigerians side who were better than their winless status suggested.
And despite a brave fightback Southend were denied a great escape when Ben Green's drop goal attempt fell five metres short in the final minute.
The defeat was also a blow for Green, who raised hopes on 68 minutes when he chipped over the opposition backs and downed the ball for a solo try which Ali Chambers converted.
