David Sheepshanks has admitted Rotherham boss Ronnie Moore may be considered for the vacant managers' job at Ipswich Town.
But he vehemently denies approaching the Millers before Saturday's 2-1 success against Sheffield Wednesday at Portman Road.
Rotherham claim they received a phone call from the Ipswich chairman at 4pm on Friday.
But Sheepshanks, looking for a new manager after last week's sacking of George Burley, said: "I'd love to know where these rumours came from.
"Whether it was a hoax call or whether I've got some impersonator I don't know."
Sheepshanks did, however, admit: "I'm very pleased people of Ronnie Moore's calibre think highly of the job.
"He has done wonderful things for Rotherham and we would be foolish not to think of people like him."
