Darren Hubbard and Pat Coughlan, who work for Thamesway in Basildon, livened up their routes by jangling collection tins and gaining sponsors until England went out of the World Cup.

They also collected old mobile phones which were handed over to St Luke's Hospice at the bus depot in Cherrydown East, Basildon, along with the cheque for £270.

Marilyn Munt, fundraising manager for the charity, said: "We are delighted because if we did not get this type of support there is no way we could keep our doors open."

The mobile phones received are recycled and roughly £3 each is given back to St Luke's."
