Tots took their teddy bears to a sing-a-long nursery rhymes event in an effort to encourage parents to read books with children.

A kid's best friend - two year-old Samuel Godsafe took his teddy bear along to the event at Southend Library as part of National Bookstart Day Picture: STEVE O'CONNELL

Children under five enjoyed songs and stories, tucked into birthday cake and were each given a free book at Southend library, in Victoria Avenue.

The event was organised as part of National Bookstart Day.
