A plan to convert a former bank in Market End, Coggeshall to a restaurant has been agreed by planners-despite a massive outcry from villagers.
The Braintree Area Committee approved the scheme on Tuesday although 420 people signed a protest petition claiming the use would be detrimental to the conservation area, street scene and the appearance of nearby listed buildings.
They also complained that there were no parking and delivery facilities and the closeness of a pedestrian crossing could cause problems.
Approval was given on the basis that there would be no takeaway facilities. An earlier application for an Indian restaurant with a takeaway was refused.
