Blues boss Rob Newman is calling on fans to create a carnival atmosphere and lift his team to a third straight win.

Victory over York City tomorrow would lift Southend ahead of the seventh-placed Minstermen and could catapult them into a Third Division play-off spot for the first time this season.

And amid talk of the fans returning to the North Bank, Newman is urging them to rekindle the Roots Hall Roar regardless of where they are sitting in the stadium.

"The fans are talking about the North Bank but my coaches probably know more about that than me," he said.

"But if tomorrow's crowd can make as much noise as the 250 who went to Bury we could have a real carnival atmosphere at Roots Hall. We want to go out and win the game and send everyone home happy."

The magnificent travelling support at Bury helped lift the team to a 3-1 win after a disappointing first half and more of the same would help Newman instill the consistency he is seeking from his players.

Earlier this season a trio of wins over Oxford, Cambridge and Rochdale put the Shrimpers within touching distance of the play-offs, only for the chance to slip away from them.

"We have had two wins on the trot but it is very important that we get a positive result against York," said Newman. "To go to Bury and win was very impressive for the team but I am still looking for that consistency.

"Tomorrow is a chance for us not only to beat a team above us in the league but to keep that winning run going.

"They did the double over us last season and they've started well this time so there's a great incentive for us to beat them."

There will be no changes from the squad which won at Gigg Lane last week, with Mark Rawle's hamstring injury keeping him out.

And although Newman has drawn up a list of loan targets to come to the club as required, there are no plans for any new arrivals just yet.

That means striker Graeme Jones will look to extend his scoring run after hitting the target in the last two games with four-goal Tes Bramble alongside him.

David McSweeney has returned to training but is not yet ready to figure in the first team.
