Arsonists who caused a "spectacular fire"- forcing neighbours to move their cars - are being hunted by police.

Firefighters were called to a blazing car at the junction of Mendip Crescent and Dunster Avenue in Westcliff late on Thursday night. Crews from Leigh fire station took around 20 minutes to put out the flames.

A by-stander and resident who saw the fire said: "We were in the kitchen and we came out and saw the car was on fire.

"We thought the car was going to explode because the fire was raging so fiercely and the engine had caught light. The flames were absolutely massive. We rang the fire brigade and neighbours were moving their cars out of the way in case the fire spread.

"The fire brigade were brilliant. Their response time was very good and they stopped the car exploding or the fire spreading."

Sub officer Steve Woodward said: "It was a very spectacular fire."
