Speeding cars and tight bends have provoked councillors to request police action at an accident blackspot.
Witham Road - connecting Braintree to Faulkbourne - has been the scene of a host of accidents with speeding vehicles ending up in ditches or gardens.
The road currently has a 40mph limit but parish councillors for both White Notley and Faulkbourne have asked Essex Police to carry out regular speed checks as they believe too many motorists are "flying" down the road.
Parish council clerk for Faulkbourne, Angela Balcombe, said: "We asked Essex County Council for a 30mph speed limit some time ago but they refused.
"After our last parish council meeting I wrote to the police requesting speed checks because we don't think people are sticking to the limit."
But the request is unlikely to provoke immediate action.
A police spokesperson said that the force would not do an "off the cuff" check in response to a letter. Mobile speed cameras are placed in the area as part of their routine though, he added.
