Basildon Council was today in political turmoil after two Labour councillors dramatically quit the group.
The move, at last night's council meeting, sparked a series of behind-the-scenes meetings as Labour battled to cling to power.
But with the Conservatives now having more councillors than Labour and the Liberal Democrats combined, it could be only a matter of time before the Tories take over.
Labour, led by Nigel Smith, has only been able to form an administration with the support of the Lib Dems and the casting vote of Lib Dem chairman Joe White.
The situation has been muddied, however, by the two councillors - Mo Larkin (Lee Chapel North) and David Abrahall (Vange) - insisting they will still vote with Labour on most issues.
Their decision had an immediate effect with the Tories winning three votes at last night's meeting.
