A married man from Southend who was serving a seven-and-a-half year prison sentence in a Durham prison has committed suicide in his cell.
Paul Day, 31, was convicted of attempted robbery before being sent to Frankland Prison in Durham.
A spokeswoman for Durham police said: "He was found hanging in his cell on October 2.
"He was in the cell on his own and a ligature was found. There are no suspicious circumstances."
An inquest into his death was opened today.
