A radical shake-up of Basildon's police force is a "step in the right direction", Billericay's MP John Baron said today.
The Tory has welcomed plans to boost police numbers across the district, including Billericay, Wickford and Pitsea.
The scheme - which will see the central Divisional Response Group disbanded and police returned to local communities - has been called for by beat officers.
Mr Baron vigorously campaigned to see an increase in police numbers and last year 5,500 signed a petition calling for a change in the local constabulary.
He said: "One of my main priorities has been to campaign for a change in police numbers. The public wants to see more police on the streets."
