A major increase in Chelmsford's kerbside recycling collection programme has been signalled with the announcement of a Government grant of £736,000.
Councillor Trevor Miller, borough council executive member for the environment, said: "We have really got to grips with this issue over the last 12 months and have now approved in principle a blueprint until the end of the next financial year.
"Forty-five thousand households are already provided with dry kerbside recycling and we plan to extend the alternate weekly collection of organic and residual waste, trialled in South Woodham Ferrers, to other parts of the borough. If this is a success, then by 2004/05 a further 58,000 households would receive it."
Galleywood, Tile Kiln and Moulsham Lodge are scheduled to receive an organic recycling service from October 21, and 20,000 rural households in the borough should have dry and organic recycling schemes early next year.
