Green Goddesses have been spotted out and about in Colchester.
Ready for action - a Green Goddess on the streets of Colchester
The Green Goddesses will be used by the military if firefighters decide to take strike action. A total of 19,000 military personnel nationally are preparing to be called out to tackle blazes.
Soldiers from Colchester-based 3 Para and 19 Regiment, Royal Artillery are training for firefighting duties. Crews of six will be headed by a leader from the RAF or Navy.
An Army spokesman said none of the 1950s Green Goddesses are being housed at the barracks.
The result of a ballot by the Fire Brigades Union is due to be announced next week. The firefighters are calling for a £30,000 pay deal.
