A new parking area is on the cards at a Witham woods to help stamp out illegal dumping.

Witham Town Council has lodged an application with Braintree Council to construct a gravel parking area for eight cars at James Cooke wood off Maldon Road.

The 15 and a half-acre woodland was established as a community woodland in partnership with the Forestry Commission about nine years ago.

But flytippers have continued to dump their rubbish at the end of the track leading to the wood.

The town council now hopes to have a parking area constructed just off Maldon Road, so it is more visible, in an attempt to deter people from dumping rubbish.

Chairman of the community services committee Tom Hewitt said: "If it's more visible people will hopefully stop dumping their rubbish."
